Its member poll indicated that a large proportion of member firms agreed that the existing agreement was impeding commercial success.

A number of other areas could, feasibly, see a comparable strategy – alignment with EU regulations – in return for minimising post-Brexit barriers across production, in automotive, pharmaceuticals, or for example in arrangements for VAT.

Continental Reaction

Member states were underwhelmed by the lack of ambition in last year's reset, notably the UK dismissal of proposals floated by some commentators regarding the virtual readmission of British goods to the internal market.

Some UK insiders note that the issuing of a key US strategy document has shifted the context on UK relations with Europe.

The paper noted that the US would "cultivate resistance" to the EU's present path and commended the "growing influence" of certain political parties.

In government circles, there is an acknowledgement that the international situation has evolved further.

Political Calculations

On the national stage, the governing party also anticipates being pressured on Brexit by one opposition party, but additionally another, which is targeting its traditional heartlands in May's elections.
