Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Latest Personal Milestone

In the final days of December, Williams wed Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
