Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly built on promises to address increasing crime and drastically reduce migration.
He consistently cited immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His plans included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing camps, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Regional Trend
Numerous analysts see Kast's win as aligning with a wider conservative shift in the region, following this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further view it as a part of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Clear Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast is not expected to hold an overall majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are grouped together.
This political reality might challenge his plans, including a vow to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed specifics.
"There are numerous things about what a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not detailed his methods for implement them," noted a political science analyst.
The analyst stated, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. However where there is considerably less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue across the campaign."
