This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
