The Two Fatalities Revealed in Brown University Incident as Law Enforcement Continue Hunt for Killer.
Both young individuals who lost their lives in the recent tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the only individual of interest in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.
What Happened
Nine more persons were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man detained in a search at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community”.
The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the news agency.
Police that searched the inn seized two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was detained, according to reports.

Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
