The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
