The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
