The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
