Our Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Premier Place.

At first glance, this work may look more like a challenging university challenge than a new popular music album from an artist who just had a last single featured an international pop star. Divided into four different parts and performed in 13 tongues, this is a breathtaking symphonic opus that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. The pure ambition by itself renders the efforts of other artists appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking is nothing short of a miracle, with complete credit going to Rosalía. While this is not her first album to blend the past and the present, its scale are far higher here, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful energy comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in with cartoonish force. The song then shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you rarely quite understand—or even wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost every track finishes at a completely distinct point from how it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused style starts off dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act of the album is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spirals skyward. That feat is echoed by a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried gems that takes patience to completely explore but never feels like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
