The British tennis star achieved the biggest win of his career by coming back from a lost first set to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory signifies Norrie's initial victory over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the fifth UK male player in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my tennis journey, my first win over the world No 1 and likely the most in-form competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament victories, which represented the best series of results in the Spanish star's early professional path.

Match Breakdown

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he eased through the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie steadily fought his way back into the game by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding points. His persistent consistency and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old looked notably struggling executing his forehand, which has been the best shot in the sport for much of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie presented Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his steadiness, fitness and depth all match while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to force himself inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Professional Context

After dealing for a long time due to a significant physical setback and struggles with his form, the tennis professional fell as far down as 91st globally this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the French Open second week subsequently, this win further underlines the experienced player's development as he aims to return to the top 20 and beyond. Alcaraz, despite his extraordinary accomplishments, is has not yet solve how to deliver his best tennis in indoor conditions.
