Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather could to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
