Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley Set for ‘All or Nothing’ Showdown with Chance at Oleksandr Usyk on the Table
The boxing world is in a real slump this year, with limited compelling matchups and considerably fewer compelling bouts than normal. The prospect of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the O2 Arena provides some solace to the beleaguered business. The victor will very likely face champion Oleksandr Usyk next year. In opposition, the unsuccessful boxer is likely to lament the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.
Danger and Risk Define This Showdown
Parker is on a hot streak since his most recent setback to fighter Joe Joyce three years ago. The New Zealand veteran, who secured a world title in 2016, has been reinvigorated by his switch of trainers to the inspirational Andy Lee. He has won six fights in a row, earning notable recognition for the composed manner in which he beat powerful Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole.
Wardley has methodically constructed his unbeaten record over 20 bouts, while showing remarkable punching power versus Frazer Clarke in a return fight last year, and, this summer, when he knocked out Justin Huni with one frightening shot. But Clarke pushed Wardley to the absolute limit when their brutal first fight ended in a draw – and Huni was ahead decisively on all three scorecards before he was pole-axed in the tenth round.
The Quiet Charisma of Both Men
The low-key appeal of each fighter is strengthened by the fact that they now find themselves at the brink of a championship opportunity. Yet both are vulnerable. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, besides three setbacks, he has been sent to the canvas repeatedly by multiple challengers. He invariably recovers but Wardley hits harder than any fighter he's fought – with the exclusion of Wilder who appeared diminished of a devastating finisher when Parker secured a clear unanimous decision in late 2023.
Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was twenty, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.
“This is the biggest bout, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have stepped up when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker insists on fighting.
“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his time. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I have respect for my rival and his achievements and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am going to show it on Saturday.”
The Perspective of Wardley
Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my career and the most important fight ever. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be the same. The divide between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative throughout my career.
“He's a seasoned veteran for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his resume. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a significant time and had several tough bouts. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”
The Final Verdict
But the lingering doubt persists that Parker will be too veteran, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a clear gap.
