The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
