Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Criticism
Individuals from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
